CAPE TOWN - A terrorism case against a man who allegedly made a hoax phone call to police about various bomb threats in Belville has been transferred to a regional court.
The accused faces various charges related to Terrorism and Contravention of the Explosives Acts.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said terrorism accused Ferdinand Fortuin is set to make his first appearance in the Bellville Regional Court on 24 April.
"The State alleges that the 49-year-old Mamre resident contacted the Bellville police station on 11 November 2024 and informed officers that he had placed explosive devices at the Bellville Department of Water and Sanitation offices in Voortrekker Road."
Fortuin allegedly told police he had placed more bombs at the Transnet park building and the Bellville taxi rank.
"This resulted in the deployment of substantial state resources and the evacuation of thousands of people from the three sites."
Ntabazalila said although the threats proved to be a hoax, the NPA views the charges in a serious light, as they caused panic and economic disruption at the three sites.
