The South African Weather Service has issued an advisory for high temperatures over the next few days. It said that the Cape Winelands, the West Coast and the Cape Metropole would experience high temperatures from today until Sunday.

CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management Centre is urging the public to be cautious on Thursday as temperatures are expected to soar.

According to the South African Weather Service, the mercury is set to peak at around 33 degrees in the Cape Metropole.

It advised people to limit any outside activity.

It said that the Cape Winelands, the West Coast and the Cape Metropole would experience high temperatures from today until Sunday. 

The city’s Disaster Risk Management Centre advised people to take the necessary precautions to limit their risk of heat exposure.

Spokesperson, Sonica Lategan, sais that it was important to look out for vulnerable individuals such as young children, the elderly and pregnant women.  

"Take action at the first sign of a heat-related illness like muscle cramps, heavy sweating, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, fainting, confusion, a fast pulse and high body temperature. Seek emergency medical assistance immediately."

She said that runners participating in the Two Oceans Marathon and half marathon should also take extra caution this weekend.
