This is not the first time labour unrest has disrupted services at the city’s waste management service provider.

Last year, workers downed tools, claiming they were overlooked for permanent positions despite years of service as contract employees.

Pikitup spokesperson Muzi Mkhwanazi says the company is working to resolve the issue.

"Pikitup management confirms that while employees at all depots have reported for duty, waste collection services have not yet commenced due to an internal work stoppage. Management is actively engaging with worker representatives to address the concerns and expedite a resolution.

"We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused and assure residents that restoring normal services is our top priority. Updates on the recovery plan will be shared as the situation progresses. Your patience and understanding are appreciated during this time."
