JOHANNESBURG - The mother of the seven-year-old girl that was raped in the Eastern Cape has been involved in an accident shortly before meeting with police officers amid investigations.
According to police, the parent of the minor was involved in a single vehicle crash but sustained no injuries.
The incident comes as police top brass sift through documents and conduct a deep dive into the case after a nationwide uproar over how the South African Police Service handled the matter.
Investigations into the rape of the Eastern Cape minor hit a bit of a snag on Wednesday.

This is after the complainant, the mother of the survivor, was involved in an accident, hindering her ability to meet with the head of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.
She alleged that the incident took place on 14 October 2024, and her statement will be key as officials unearth the answers to what happened on the day.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe explained: “We will be giving her time to recuperate, but at an opportune time, we will be meeting with her. We need to get her statement. It is crucial in this particular investigation.”
Meanwhile, investigations are continuing in the matter, with the case dockets currently being scrutinised.
