JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) said it won't be axing parties from the Government of National Unity (GNU) that won't be supporting the national budget.

Ahead of the budget vote in Parliament on Wednesday, the relationship between the two biggest parties in the GNU has turned sour.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) said it would not be supporting the budget in its current format, while the ANC has looked for parties outside the GNU to help it pass the budget without the DA.

Speaking at a media briefing on Tuesday, ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula said there was likely going to be implications for GNU parties that were not going to be supporting the budget.

"The ANC is committed to the GNU with all its partners but the maturity of partners is very important in relation to this GNU. The ANC is not wielding an axe that we want to cut people in the GNU, they will cut themselves out."
