JOHANNESBURG - Police have called for calm amid a nationwide uproar over the rape of a seven-year-old girl in a Matatiele school in the Eastern Cape.
The incident has led to protests across the country calling for action after the mother of the child, who is also a police officer, claimed she received little to no help from law enforcement officials.
This is despite the incident having allegedly took place in October last year.

This has led to the national South African Police Service (SAPS) descending on the Eastern Cape to probe the matter further, and bolster the capacity of the provincial SAPS as investigations continue.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe has, however, assured South Africans that justice will be served.
"We are calling for calm. Yes, there are cases that we are able to solve faster and much quicker, but there are then those complex cases that will need more time and more focus. But we do assure South Africans that we have put all the available resources on this particular case and our end goal is to find justice."
