JOHANNESBURG - The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) has lashed out at police for what it has termed as a failure to arrest suspects in the rape of a seven-year-old learner on school premises.

The little girl was raped, allegedly by a staffer at the institution in October last year.

Her mother, who is also a police officer, alleges that she has received little to no help from law enforcement.

The incident has caused an uproar in the country, with many calling for accountability after the child was allegedly expelled from the school following the incident.

NUMSA has now joined the call for action to be taken.

Unions spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola: "It is shocking that even though the child reported the incident to her mother, and she did so swiftly, no action has been taken, and to date, the investigation has not isolated a suspect. The irony is that Cwecwe’s parents are employed by SAPS, but they are unable to get help from the very same organisation where they are employed. This shows how difficult it must be for ordinary citizens to be helped when facing similar conditions."
