JOHANNESBURG - Motorists are in for a treat at the pumps this week after a tough start to the year.

Both grades of petrol and diesel prices are set to drop overnight when the fuel adjustments take effect at midnight, putting the brakes on three consecutive increases.

The mineral resources and energy department announced the latest changes today.

Spokesperson Robert Maake said, "Petrol 93 octane will decrease by 58 cents per litre and 95 octane will decrease by 72 cents per litre, diesel will decrease between 83 cents and 85 cents per litre, paraffin at retail level will decrease by R1.14 cents per litre and the maximum price for LP gas will decrease by 79 cents per kilogram.”

He says lower oil prices are partially to thank for the reprieve.

“The reason for these decreases are the lower oil prices and stronger rand against the dollar during the period under review,” explained Maake.
