CAPE TOWN - The number of drunk drivers that have been arrested in the City of Cape Town has doubled in the past week.
The city’s traffic officers made 39 arrests, and 30 were for driving under the influence.
These statistics coincide with an incident that took place on Sunday, where a drunk driver hit two runners in Bantry Bay.
MMC for Safety and Security, JP Smith said: "A complete disregard for safety, the rule of law and consideration for others have become synonymous with a payday weekend. Our officers across departments brace for this time of the month, as much of the havoc can be ascribed to alcohol abuse."
Smith said that traffic officers were prepared and ready to deal with lawlessness.
"While we continue to plead with the public to behave responsibly, they are reminded that our enforcement staff are dedicated and at the ready to clamp down on behaviour which puts others at risk."
