JOHANNESBURG - The Uyinene Mrwetyana foundation has called on law enforcement to act with urgency in the case of a seven-year-old who was raped allegedly at a school last year.

In videos circulating online, her mother, a police officer, said she had tried to get assistance from the police to no avail.

The foundation said it found it appalling that this case had not resulted in an arrest.

The case of the little girl has brought into sharp focus the lack of safety for women in South Africa, including in schools.

The foundation lashed out at the school for allegedly expelling the little girl following the disclosure of the incident, calling it an act of cruelty and victimisation.

It called for further action to be taken against the Eastern Cape school and applauded provincial education MEC, Fundile Gade, for revoking the school's operating license.

The organisation has called on South Africans to stand in solidarity with the family and has offered to provide free psychological support for the minor.
