Calls for justice grow in rape of girl (7) at EC school

JOHANNESBURG - There are growing calls for justice in the rape of a seven-year-old girl at an Eastern Cape school.

The child's mother said the little girl was raped in October.

Bergview College has come under fire for transferring the pupil to another school after the ordeal.

The principal is allegedly refusing to provide police with his DNA sample.

The school is now facing deregistration from the provincial Department of Education.

Civil rights movement NotInMyName has called for an overhaul on how schools handle the rape of children.

“The rape of a 7-year-old child, Cwecwe, is an abhorrent crime that demands immediate and unwavering action,” said NotInMyName's Themba Masango.

“We stand in solidarity with all forward-thinking South Africans in condemning this atrocity and echo their calls for justice, accountability, and reform.”

Masango said the Education Department needs to hold schools accountable when they mishandle sensitive cases.

“Law enforcement must prioritise this case with urgency, ensuring a trauma-informed approach to avoid revictimisation. We are also condemning the school for its nonchalant behaviour towards this case, and we are saying that justice needs to be served.”
