JOHANNESBURG - Two former senior intelligence officers have been arrested for allegedly defrauding the state security of R5.8 million.

Ntshavheni Makhathana and Matome Ralebipi appeared at the Palm Ridge specialised commercial crimes court on Monday, where they were released on R10000 and R150,000 bail respectively.

They are facing several counts of fraud, money laundering and forgery.

Ntshavheni Makhathana worked as a manager for the cover support unit of the national intelligence agency, which is now known as the state security agency, between 2007 and 2010.

As manager, responsible for the operations and financial expenditure of the unit, Makhathana allegedly exploited his position to defraud the intelligence agency of R5.8 million.

The National Prosecuting Authority has accused Makhathana of laundering this money through the property company of his accomplice, Matome Ralebipi, who was an intelligence agent.

Their matter has been postponed to 23 June for pre-trial.
