JOHANNESBURG – South Africa’s para-athletes are competing at the 2025 Toyota SASAPD (South African Sports Association for Physically Disabled) National Championships in Gqeberha.
The championships, happening from 30 March - 1 April, are the biggest sporting event in the country for para-athletes.
This is where they qualify for an upcoming international competition, the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships, which will take place in September in New Delhi, India.
In the 2024 SASAPD championships, a total of 111 national records were set in Para athletics and Para swimming. Seven African records were broken and two equalled, while Puseletso Mabote set a new world record in the men’s 200m T63.
This year promises to be equally spectacular in para-sports, with athletes like Paralympic gold medallist Simone Kruger and 400m T47 specialist Collen Mahlalela being some of the names at the event.
