JOHANNESBURG - Motorists in parts of Johannesburg have been advised to make use of alternative routes, as various roads have been closed for the Johannesburg City Marathon on Sunday.

The race started in Kibler Park at 5 am this morning, and affects roads in the south of Johannesburg and the M1 and M2 highways.

The event includes the 10-, 21- and 42-kilometre race, which is expected to end at midday.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla is urging motorists to exercise patience and to plan their travel routes to avoid delays

"Road closures have been implemented in Columbine and Vereeniging Road, Gordan and Vereeniging road, Max Street and Peer Point Drive, the M1 South Xavier on ramp and closure at the traffic lights, the M1 South Booysens on ramp and closure to the M1 North.
