State argues it's safer for Zanzou nightclub torture suspect to be kept in jail

JOHANNESBURG - The state argued against bail for the man accused of torture at the Zanzou nightclub in Pretoria, arguing it was for his own safety.
The 41-year-old Congolese national made a formal bail application in the Pretoria Magistrates Court on Friday.

He was arrested last month after videos went viral online showing young men being sexually assaulted by bouncers at the night club.
The State also told the court the man, who cannot be named at this stage, came to South Africa without a passport and he could easily skip the country.
The man contended he is in South Africa on an asylum visa.
The prosecution team also revealed to the court that the accused has told the investigating officer that he fears the other bouncers he worked with and his wife have been receiving suspicious phone calls
They argue the accused is safer behind bars.
The bail hearing is set to continue next week.
