CAOPE TOWN - Friends of Table Mountain have launched a safety initiative to curb crime on Table Mountain.

Signal Hill and Lion's Head have become mugging hotspots, with tourists and locals alike falling prey to criminals.

SANParks, the South African Police Service and Camps Bay CID have also joined forces in an effort to put a stop to criminal activity on the mountain.

Spokesperson for friends of Table Mountain, Andy Davies, said their initiative aims to increase patrols to target serial muggers.

"Unfortunately, we’ve seen quite a big spike in crime around Signal Hill and Lion's Head and we’re busy tracking those stats at the moment so yeah there's definitely been an increase there.”

Davies adds that while technology will also be used, boots on the ground will be prioritised.

"I definitely think there's a place for drones to operate at certain circumstances. I mean, we must remember it's a national park and you know people don't want to be harassed by drones can you imagine walking up the mountain and you've got a drone following you around. Drones also have a limited flight time so you can't have them up in the air all the time, so I think if there is a specific incident, there is definitely a case for using a drone.”
