Cyber security expert cautions Sassa and Postbank card holders to remain vigilant

CAPE TOWN - The migration to the Postbank black card is meant to protect social grant recipients from fraud, but cybersecurity expert Lucas Molefe warns that beneficiaries are still falling victim to scammers.

A two-month extension has been announced for those who missed the 20 March deadline to switch from the Sassa gold cards to the Postbank black card.

Molefe advises cardholders to stay vigilant against cyber scams and highlighted some key red flags to watch out for.

"Phishing attempts disguised as app updates and SMS phishing, which is basically called 'smishing', unusual spikes of data use - that's a big one because all of a sudden you had 5 – 10 gigs and all of a sudden its gone or unauthorized access to your accounts.”

Molefe adds that scammers are making use of advanced technology to hack people and businesses.

"And based on our report last year, I think it was Quarter 1 - a threat report highlighted a growing use of artificial intelligence by attackers. Basically, what they do is to create compelling fake messages and impersonations.”
