JOHANNESBURG - The Tshwane municipality wants to introduce a new R194 monthly waste refuse tariff, called city cleansing.

This tariff will be charged on all properties with no existing waste account and are worth over R250,000.

Agricultural holdings and vacant lands below R250,000 will be exempted from this new tariff.

The Tshwane municipality council will table the draft budget for the 2025/2026 financial year on Thursday.

The budget includes double-digit tariff increases for water and electricity.

It also includes the new city cleansing tariff, which will be charged at R194,37 cents per month.

The tariff will be charged to all qualifying properties irrespective of who removes their waste.

Democratic Alliance (DA) Tshwane chairperson Jacqui Uys said the party will be voting against this budget.

"No new taxes should be introduced. The focus should rather be on law enforcement on both illegal dumping and theft of electricity as a way to fund the city's electricity and waste models."

If the budget is passed, the tariff will go into effect from 1 July.
