JOHANNESBURG - President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for sanitation in schools to be prioritised, saying challenges should be treated as a matter of life and death.

Ramaphosa made the call in Midrand on Thursday, where he delivered the keynote address at the Water Indaba.

He said it has taken too long to address sanitation issues at schools when the lives of children were at risk.

The president's call comes as the basic education department races to meet its deadline to eradicate pit latrines at schools by 31 March.

Ramaphosa said that the lives of children needed to be saved.
