CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape is set to have a drier winter this year compared to last year.

On Thursday, the South African Weather Service presented its winter rainfall predictions for the province and all indications are that it will be below normal.

The South African Weather Service said that residents in the Western Cape were in for less rain in the coming months.

Officials from the service held a media information session at Parliament on Thursday to share its rainfall forecast for the province’s winter.

Lead scientist at the service, Christien Engelbrecht, said there was less rain expected this year.

"If this below normal rainfall prediction materialises, then it means the replenishment of the water storage is not taking place as it should, so then it puts stress on the next season."

In July last year, Cape Town recorded the highest monthly rainfall in 64 years.
