JOHANNESBURG - The South African government has reaffirmed its commitment to peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) despite the imminent withdrawal of its troops.

International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola was in a bilateral meeting in Pretoria with the DRC foreign minister, Therese Kayiwamba.

Over the past few months, the DRC government has been in a bloody territorial conflict with the Rwanda-backed militia group M23.

A shaky ceasefire is currently in place, however, bouts of violence have been reported in recent days.

Lamola said he was hopeful of a peaceful resolution.

"Our support for your country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty remains solid and unwavering. We will not rest until the women and children of Eastern DRC are able to sleep without fear of any danger. It is for this reason we support the strengthened mediation process as agreed during the recent joint East African Community and SADC summit."
