JOHANNESBURG - The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has welcomed the conviction of a Gauteng police officer found guilty of murder.

Constable Courtney Bandordien Madella was found guilty by the Johannesburg High Court on Tuesday for killing her girlfriend in February 2023.

The court heard that the 31-year-old officer had an argument with her partner, Nomalungelo Khumalo, at Herdersdof Police barracks in Sophiatown.

The officer, who was stationed at Brixton South African Police Service (SAPS), took a container with an unknown chemical inside, and threw it at Khumalo.

The chemical spilled over Khumalo's body and another person who was the residence, causing serious injuries.

IPID spokesperson Phaladi Shuping said Madella will be sentenced in April.

"The incident was investigated by IPID, and the docket was handed to the prosecutors, and she was found guilty. The case was postponed to 24 April 2025 for sentencing."
