CAPE TOWN - Democratic Alliance (DA) Western Cape leader, Tertuis Simmers, believes more members of opposition political parties will cross the floor in the run-up to next year's local government elections.

This came after 49 religious leaders joined the DA on Wednesday from several opposition parties, including the African National Congress (ANC), the African Christian Democratic Party, and the African Restoration Alliance.

Simmers said more defectors could be expected in the coming months.

"Our party is consistently approached by incumbent councillors from other parties to join the DA. Obviously, it's their choice at which stage of this journey towards 2026 they do come into the DA fold. We do welcome them because most of the time it's not about what they can gain. It's what contribution can they make to change where they currently are, what their current party is focusing on is not in the interest of the communities it’s in self-interest."
