JOHANNESBURG - Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero has warned political parties to practise diplomatic sensitivity when raising frustrations over the proposed renaming of Sandton Drive.
The bid to rename the road to Leila Khaled Drive is currently in the consultation process.
With the American embassy located on Sandton Drive, there are suggestions that renaming it after the Palestinian struggle icon will worsen diplomatic tensions with the United States (US).
Speaking at a media briefing on Wednesday, Morero said the matter must be treated with the utmost sensitivity.
“We are still in consultation, precisely because we’d like to manage the diplomatic issues and must be guided by national policy, which supersedes our own local policy. So, we will be directed by those engagements.”
