JOHANNESBURG - Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero has acknowledged public opposition to the proposed renaming of Sandton Drive but confirmed the proposal remains in the public consultation phase.
In 2018, the City of Johannesburg approved a motion to rename the road to Leila Khaled Drive in honour of the Palestinian freedom fighter.
The city council remains divided on the matter, with some opposing the change, citing concerns over sensitive diplomatic ties with the United States (US), while others continue to support it.
“If the name change goes ahead, the United States consulate in Sandton would be located on a street named after a person the current US government refers to as a terrorist.”
Speaking at a media briefing on Wednesday morning, Morero emphasised that the city has yet to reach a final decision on the renaming.
