JOHANNESBURG - More than 50 foreign nationals, suspected of being victims of a human trafficking syndicate, have escaped from a property in Lombardy East, Johannesburg.

Private security was called to the scene earlier on Wednesday after neighbours saw the group running into the streets.

The suspected victims are believed to be of Somalian and Ethiopian descent, among others.

Behind the high walls of the property in Lombardy East, lies a dilapidated house which was, until Wednesday morning, filled with suspected victims of a human trafficking syndicate.

A foul stench greets you as you enter the premises, as buckets of urine, dirty blankets and loaves of bread are the only items in sight.

Rescuers said they found some of the victims fighting over bread while those who ran out were restrained.

The youngest victim is said to be just 15 years old.

They have been taken to a place of safety while investigations unfold.
