DURBAN - There has been mixed reaction to the concerns raised by the Independent Police Investigating Directorate (IPID) about the conduct of police in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).
IPID boss Dikeledi Ntlatseng has called on KZN residents to come forward with information on police-related matters.
This follows several deadly shootouts involving suspected criminals and police.
Some KZN residents have also weighed in on the matter. Some Durban residents have come out to defend the actions of the police in KZN.
It comes after IPID raised concerns about the state of policing in the province.
Some residents in KZN said this was an attack on the police.
One Durban resident said the police should defend themselves at all costs while on the job.
"We know that crime is very high, and statistics show that there will be high confrontation, which will definitely lead to deaths, with a province, which is a province with hitmen, whenever you encounter hitmen, they will want to shoot at the police. What must happen?"
Meanwhile, Thabiso Khumalo said that where police are wrong, they must be held accountable.
"Talking from experience, in Claremont, I have seen someone running but got shot in the back. There was no accountability or transparency, and two weeks later that policeman was back at work as if nothing happened."
According to the police, 107 suspected criminals were killed by police between 30 July 2023 and 30 July 2024.
