The victims were part of a group who died on the scene after being stoned, shot and burnt by suspected criminals.

At a community hall in Soshanguve on Tuesday, Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, alongside Lesufi and other provincial officials, addressed the families and gave an update on the police case.

Lesufi said two of the eight who were initially admitted had died, while two others had been discharged.

He added that hospital staff were doing their best to help the four make a full recovery.

"In total, we have two other people have been discharged and we are remaining with four regarding the hospital. We visited all of them at the hospital. Indeed, the situation was bad, but the medical team has assured us that they will attend to the situation. The minister has expressed sincere condolences."

A family member of one of the survivors said the police were guarding those who were still in hospital.

Lesufi did not reveal where they are being treated, as the surviving four are witnesses in a police investigation.
