JOHANNESBURG - As the war in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continues, Minister of Defence Angie Motshekga is set to meet with her counterpart in the country, Guy Kabombo Muadiamvita, to discuss vital defence strategies.

South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers are currently deployed under a Southern African Development Community (SADC) peacekeeping mission in the DRC.

Their mission is to stabilise the eastern regions, where M23 rebels, reportedly backed by Rwandan forces, have captured key cities and displaced thousands.

However, the peacekeeping efforts are facing logistical challenges and inadequate funding.

Muadiamvita’s visit to South Africa began on Monday and will run until Thursday, aiming to strengthen bilateral defence ties between the two nations.

South African Defence Ministry spokesperson Onicca Kwakwa said this partnership is crucial for regional stability.

“The defence collaboration between South Africa and the DRC is of paramount importance, not just for our two countries, but for the broader African continent. This partnership is crucial for fostering peace, security and stability across the region.”
