JOHANNESBURG - The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) says it is outraged and deeply saddened by what is termed the heinous killing of five community safety forum members in Soshanguve, Pretoria.

The group was shot and stoned to death during clashes with suspected criminals at the ‘Marry Me’ informal settlement at the weekend.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has given officers 72 hours to find the perpetrators while Police Minister Senzo Mchunu condemned the killing.

POPCRU said the incident underscores the escalating dangers faced by community policing forum (CPF) members and law enforcement officers across the country.

"This tragic incident underscores the escalating dangers faced by CPF members and law enforcement officers across the country. POPCRU has consistently voiced concerns over the increasing attacks on those who dedicate their lives to protecting others. We reiterate our call for a national dialogue to address the safety and well-being of all security personnel and to develop comprehensive strategies to prevent such tragedies in the future," said spokesperson, Richard Mamabolo.
