DURBAN - The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) Youth Brigade said that the party should not be characterised by the past - citing black-on-black violence.

On Sunday, the IFP commemorated its 50-year anniversary, with thousands of supporters at the Prince Mangosuthu Stadium in Ulundi - northern KZN.

While the IFP wants to be celebrated as one of South Africa's liberation movements, some can't quarters can't view the party beyond the black-on-black violence.

However, the party's youth wing is against this stance.

Secretary General Mlungisi Mabaso said, "All those that have perceived us as a violent organisation is because of this distortion of history in South Africa and because we've never spoken about it or set the record straight and that is why people still believe the IFP is a violent organisation.”

He maintains that the party's principles advocate for non-violence.

"Even during the looting the Prince of Kwaphindangene was on the streets and the ground calling for peace and on people not to loot."

The party said that it would carry forward the legacy of the late Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi.
