JOHANNESBURG - The South African Police Service (SAPS)’s national counterfeit goods unit has confiscated illicit cigarettes worth R4.5 million.

During the week-long operation in the North West, three Bangladeshi nationals were also arrested for contravening the Immigration Act.

SAPS spokesperson Amanda van Wyk said the multi-disciplinary team behind the busts included Crime Intelligence and the South African Revenue Service (SARS).

Van Wyk said police would continue with their efforts to remove illegitimate businesses that threaten legal companies.

"While primarily focused on combating illicit mining, these members also target other criminal activities within the provinces. SAPS remains committed to dismantling the illegal trade of counterfeit and illicit goods, which pose risks to consumers, harm legitimate businesses, and undermine the country’s economy."
