JOHANNESBURG - Two suspected drug mules have been arrested by police at OR Tambo International Airport, bringing the total number of similar arrests at the airport to five since January.

A 24-year-old Brazilian man and a 51-year-old South African woman, who travelled on the same flight from Brazil on Thursday, were found in possession of cocaine worth at least R1 million.

A medical examination further revealed that both suspects had ingested "bullets" suspected to contain cocaine.

Police spokesperson Amanda van Wyk said the process of releasing these substances was ongoing.

"The final quantity and value of the seized drugs will be determined upon completion. Further investigations are underway to establish any potential links between the two individuals. On Friday, the 21st of March, we also intercepted a shipment of white powder suspected to be heroin worth over R200,000. Preliminary investigations suggest that the shipment was destined for London, in the United Kingdom."
