JOHANNESBURG - President Cyril Ramaphosa has said that any group is free to speak to the US government however they are not acting on behalf of South Africa.
The Cape independence advocacy group recently announced it will be sending a delegation to Washington to lobby for support of its goal to secede the Western Cape from South Africa.
They are following in the footsteps of Afrikaans lobby groups AfriForum, Solidariteit and Orania group who were recently in the White house.
At a media briefing yesterday, presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said these are unelected groups who do not speak for a majority of South Africans.
"Our American counterparts will use their own discretion with respect to how they engage parties that are seeking to divide SA and return SA to a period we have long passed and one that’s deeply etched into our DNA in terms of its painful history. As a government we can’t stop people from boarding a plane and flying to a particular destination.”
