JOHANNESBURG - Two people have died after a mortuary vehicle carrying a deceased person crashed and caught fire in Ekurhuleni.
Both the driver and passenger were killed on Thursday's blaze on Clydesdale Road in springs.
According to preliminary reports the mortuary vehicle, which had collected a body from a hospital, lost control and collided with a tree.
According to police reports, the mortuary vehicle carrying the deceased burned with the driver still inside.
The passenger who was a family member of the deceased was found outside next to the big fallen tree they had crashed into.
The family member had asked the driver to take a detour to pass through the area where the deceased had passed away — as part of a ritual to take his spirit home.
Reports suggest the driver lost control of the car leading to the fatal collision.
Ekurhuleni metro police are urging motorists to exercise caution and adhere to road safety regulation to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
