DURBAN - UMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party Member of Parliament (MP) Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla is expected to stand trial in connection with the 2021 July unrest in the Durban High Court on Thursday.
In January, Zuma-Sambudla was charged with incitement to commit terrorism, and two counts of incitement to commit public violence.
This is linked to the looting and destruction of property during the July 2021 unrest.
The State is accusing the MP of being one of the instigators behind the criminal activity at the time.
Zuma-Sambudla, who is also the daughter of former President Jacob Zuma, is accused of inciting public violence in July 2021.
The State said she incited, instigated or procured other persons known and unknown to the State to forcibly assemble with common intent to violently disturb public peace and infringe upon the rights of others.
“These campaigns and social media posts called for a shutdown, particularly in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, forceful closure of national roads, shutdown of the economy, large-scale extensive damage to property, threat to human life, and a nationwide public violence," said senior State prosecutor Advocate Yuri Gangai.
The State believes the accused’s social media comments at the time fuelled the riots.
However, the MK Party has dismissed the case as just a political witch-hunt.
