A team from the mayoral committee addressed the officers on Wednesday at the Germiston Civic Centre, calling for calm.

EMPD members said going from 80 to 16 hours of overtime will create a dent in their pockets.

In turn, they are demanding a 10% increase in their income.

The members are also calling for a danger allowance fee to compensate for the risk they face while fighting crime.

Finance MMC in Ekurhuleni Jongizizwe Dlabathi said metro police are an essential service whose issues need to be addressed.

“We are optimistic that out of the agreed process, we will be in a position to respond on an issue-by-issue basis with the hope that we provide clarity.”

He apologised to residents of the city for the disruptions caused on Thursday.
