CAPE TOWN - With temperatures set to peak in the low 40s on Wednesday, residents in the Western and Northern Cape are being urged to be mindful of the effects of the heat.

The South African Weather Service issued a warning for extremely hot and uncomfortable weather conditions for the two provinces for the next two days.

It warned that extreme heat can pose a threat to one's health and environment.

Last week, the City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management Centre reported that it recorded more than 1,000 informal residential fires between July and December 2024.

The city’s Sonica Lategan shared some tips residents can follow to help them avoid getting sick.

"Key tips to beat the heat include drinking plenty of water, make use of water spray bottles to cool down, submerge your feet in cold water to help regulate blood flow that will help to cool the body, wear a wide brim hat and light loose clothing, take cool showers or baths, limit outdoor activity to earlier or later in the day."

Lategan said it was also advisable to monitor one's health throughout the day.

"Take action at the first sign of a heat-related illness, like muscle cramps, heavy sweating, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, fainting, confusion, a fast pulse and high body temperature, seek emergency medical assistance immediately."
