JOHANNESBURG - The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Gauteng wants 24-hour clinics and the insourcing of security guards in exchange for supporting the provincial budget.

On Tuesday, the Gauteng budget for the 2025/2026 financial year was tabled before the legislature.

With the African National Congress (ANC) leading a minority coalition government in the province, it has approached parties outside its bloc to help it pass the budget.

EFF Gauteng secretary Moshe Koma said the party has put forward concessions it is expecting from the coalition government.

“This budget must translate into the basic needs of our people. We made submissions in the stakeholder meeting we had that our people must have free sanitary towels by this government. There needs to be insourcing of security guards in this province. We need to get a proper stakeholder monitoring and evaluation team that’s going to make sure this budget is being monitored and translates to the problems of our people.”

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA), which is the second-largest party in the legislature, has not yet been approached by the ANC.

DA Gauteng spokesperson on finance Ruhan Robinson said the budget contains cuts to crucial portfolios.

“One of the challenges we have seen is the maintenance budget on infrastructure was reduced by R1 billion in this financial year alone. The Health Department, despite racking up R7.3 billion in deficits from the previous financial year, was only allocated an additional R1.2 billion.”
