JOHANNESBURG - Ekurhuleni Metro police officers who are found to have participated in Wednesday morning’s illegal strike will have to face the consequences.

The metro’s spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini, said investigations into the illegal protest would help the city determine what action to take.

On Wednesday morning, some law enforcement officials downed tools, blocking several routes during peak hour.

The city said that it was not made aware of any industrial action that was going to happen on Wednesday.

Talks between the relevant stakeholders and law enforcement officials are currently underway at the Ekurhuleni Civic Centre in Germiston.

Dlamini said: "We have actually started an investigation that does not only look at the abuse of council resources because those vehicles are council resources. It is also looking at officers who participated in that action when they were actually supposed to have been at work. We're also looking at the issue of carrying firearms in the public protest."
