JOHANNESBURG - Ekurhuleni Metro police have resumed their duties following protests over salary increases.

Officers are demanding a 10% increase after their overtime hours were cut from 80 to 16, significantly denting their income.

Earlier on Wednesday, members downed tools and blocked major highways, including the N12, N1, and R21, bringing traffic to a standstill.

The demonstration comes after a memorandum of demands was delivered in February, outlining the same issues that remain unanswered.

On Wednesday, members of the mayoral committee met protesters, promising to schedule a meeting to discuss solutions.

One EMPD member, who asked to remain anonymous, instructed his colleagues to return to work.

"Those who were working a morning shift from 6am to 2pm must knock off and those who start work at 2pm please go to work. The community needs us to provide service delivery."
