CAPE TOWN - The GOOD Party is calling for the release of the findings from the George building collapse investigation.
On 6 May 2024, a five-storey building in the town caved in, trapping 62 workers who were on-site at the time.
This resulted in a rescue effort that lasted close to two weeks, where 34 people were declared dead.
The provincial government appointed an independent structural engineering firm to investigate, in addition to multiple other probes.
In January, Premier Allan Winde handed over the independent structural engineering report to the police.
Over the weekend, Human Settlements Minister Thembi Simelane revealed that a preliminary report by the National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC) had found that several building inspection procedures had not been followed.
The GOOD Party's George Councillor Chantelle Kyd said the release of the findings is crucial.
"The George community anxiously awaits the outcomes of all investigations and expects prompt action based on the findings. As GOOD, we believe the Mayor needs to table both reports before the council."
She added that the people of George deserve transparency, accountability, and decisive action.
