JOHANNESSBURG - The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi for allegedly interfering with the arrest of a senior Correctional Services official in Richards Bay in 2023.
The investigation follows an anonymous complaint from the public.
Mkhwanazi has been asked to submit a sworn statement to IPID by Wednesday.
IPID has also clarified that a letter stating the police minister, Senzo Mchunu, requested the investigation was issued in error.
The cops' watchdog said the probe is still in its early stages and its inquiries remain independent and impartial.
“This investigation is as a result of an anonymous complaint from the public, and IPID will only engage on the matter once the investigation is concluded,” said spokesperson Lizzy Suping.
