JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) wants action taken against a Johannesburg MMC who taunted a Jewish councillor, saying he planned to wear a T-shirt with an image of Adolf Hitler.

At a recent council meeting, the MMC for Community Development Tebogo Nkonkou took issue with DA councillor David Schay wearing a hat with the Star of David.

The Star of David is a hexagram widely recognised as a symbol that represents Jewish identity or Judaism.

The DA in Johannesburg has accused Pan Africanist Congress of Azania councillor Tebogo Nkonkou of religious intolerance.

At a recent council meeting, Nkonkou disrupted Schay’s speech to make these comments.

"Madam Speaker, I want clarity. If it's like this, I will also come with a skiba (T-shirt), with a shirt with the face of Hitler. Hitler, do you know Hitler? And our flag. So I will do that because you allowed this to happen. I will come here with the face of Hitler because these people are killing innocent children there and women. This is a terrorist, illegal state."

Adolph Hitler was a dictator of Nazi Germany and was responsible for the Holocaust, which saw millions of Jewish people killed under his orders.

The DA in Johannesburg said it had reported Nkounkou to the city’s ethics committee and was considering laying a complaint against him at the SA Human Rights Commission.
