CAPE TOWN - Adverse weather conditions are expected to continue hitting parts of the country on Monday.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued warnings of severe thunderstorms and isolated to scattered showers.

North West, Free State, Northern Cape, Gauteng, and KwaZulu-Natal are among the provinces expecting inclement weather.

KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng have already been hit hard by bad weather in recent weeks, as the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Velenkosini Hlabisa, explained: “The bad weather conditions have affected the two provinces, but the worst is KwaZulu-Natal in terms of infrastructure and the human beings who have been lost over the past few days as the rains are continuing.”

Hlabisa said reports continue to stream in from that province.

“We are receiving constantly the reports from COGTA in KwaZulu-Natal as to the damage, and that is why we have made the classification of KwaZulu-Natal as a disaster-affected area.”

Hlabisa said this activates all departments to come on board and provide support.

“Especially to ensure that people who are on the floodplains are evacuated and we are, therefore, collecting the data in terms of the damage that has happened in the infrastructure so that soon we approach the treasurer-general in terms of seeing how financially the province of KwaZulu-Natal can be assisted.”
