CAPE TOWN- A Mitchells Plain firefighter is being hailed as a local hero after saving a five-month-old baby in a dramatic rescue.

Earlier this week, a distraught mother approached the Mitchells Plain firehouse with her choking infant.

Firefighter Michael Samuels, who was on duty at the time, quickly attended to the child and managed to dislodge a blockage in the baby’s airway.

MMC JP Smith says the baby was immediately taken to the hospital for further assistance.

"Her baby had turned blue and was in severe distress, the firefighter set about trying to check for any blockages in the airway. He managed to dislodge the blockage providing instant relief to the baby who was transported to a hospital for further observations.”
