JOHANNESBURG - The presiding judge in the rape case against prominent bishop Stephen Zondo says at this stage he believes the evidence before him is credible, reliable and trustworthy.

Zondo’s latest bid to have the charges against him withdrawn failed in the Pretoria High Court on Friday.

He is accused of raping congregants and staff at his church often under the pretense of praying for them.

Bishop Zondo tried to argue that the state has no case against him, and he should be allowed to walk free.

In his application, he tried to argue that the only reason the women were accusing him of rape is because they are trying to destroy him.

But judge Mokhine Mosopa dismissed this claim.

"Trustworthiness depends on power observation, the power of recollection and the power of narration on the specific matter testified," said Mosopa.

Zondo’s lawyers now have the task of preparing his case and calling witnesses for his defense.

The matter resumes on Monday.
