DURBAN - Water supply has been interrupted in several parts of KwaZulu-Natal as the province battles ongoing heavy rains.
An alert level 6 weather warning has been issued for areas in the eastern part of the province, while other parts have received a level 4 warning for heavy rains.
The uMngeni-uThukela Water Board said that the Mzumbe and Umdoni local municipalities on the KZN south coast were currently receiving reduced volumes of water.
Spokesperson Siyabonga Maphumulo said: "Due to the recent heavy rains, the Mthwalume water treatment works which supply these municipalities has been adversely impacted by ongoing high river water levels."
Maphumulo said the harsh weather was affecting the functionality of water treatment works.
"As a result, the abstraction system which draws water from the Mthwalume River is unable to function efficiently and the water treatment works cannot draw the required daily raw water volumes for treatment."
