JOHANNESBURG - As the South African government welcomes a ruling by a Malawi court to extradite controversial self-proclaimed prophet Shepard Bushiri, there is still no indication when the Gupta brothers will be brought back into the country to face prosecution.
On Wednesday, the court ruled that Bushiri and his wife Mary be brought back into South Africa to face the charges against them, including rape and violating the Banking Act.

The couple fled from the country in 2020 while out on bail, and it later emerged in their home country of Malawi.
Like the Bushiri’s, the notorious Gupta brothers, Atul and Ajay, fled the country while under the heat of heavy allegations of State capture.
In a bid to address cases cited in the state capture report by former Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, South Africa continues to fight to have the brothers extradited from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
In 2023, the UAE dismissed South Africa’s request to extradite the Guptas, and since then, the government’s attempts have yielded no fruit.
“We do not have the mutual legal instrument between ourselves and the UAE. So, it was easy with Malawi because we have got an agreement in place. What I can assure you is that we will not give up on the case,” said Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi.
Despite the ratification of an extradition treaty between the UAE in 2021, the Gupta brothers are yet to set foot in a South African court.
