JOHANNESBURG - The Eastern Cape Transport Department has deployed engineers to several areas in the province where roads and bridges have been severely damaged by heavy downpours.

This follows a yellow level two weather warning by the South African Weather Services on Thursday for disruptive rainfall and localised flooding.

Residents posted images and footage on social media showing infrastructure damage caused by the torrential weather.

Chris Hani, OR Tambo, Amathole and Alfred Ndzo districts are among the worst affected areas.

Department spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said that they had taken note of all the alerts circulated by community members on social media.

"None of the road damage alerts due to the heavy rains have gone unnoticed. Those sent directly to us and those that are circulated on various social media platforms. It is for that reason that we have personnel on the ground ready to quantify so we can be able to respond swiftly."
